Technical Theater Apprenticeship
With Support from Boston University School of Theatre Faculty
What is it?
A foundational training program focused on votech-oriented skills, in the context of theatrical production. This is a paid apprenticeship at the current minimum wage of $13.50 / hour.
Who’s it for?
Boston-metro youth (limited to five participants)
When:
May – June 2021 (first training phase, in-person; socially distanced with CDC protocols in place):
- Tuesdays 5 – 7 pm
- Saturdays 11 – 2
July – August

Why: To provide paid training leading to employability skills, in theater and beyond, and to lay the groundwork for more advanced training in technical theater and design.
Primary Disciplines:
- Set construction / Carpentry / Painting
- shop safety and tools of the trade
- construction methods
- painting techniques
- Electrics / Lighting / Sound
- Electrical principles and safety
- Lighting fundamentals and equipment
- Plot creation (physical): hanging, focusing, circuiting
- Amplified sound fundamentals and equipment
